The night Rob proposed to me was one of the happiest nights of my life. He truly surprised me when I opened a gift on Christmas Eve to find a custom ornament from Disney that said, will you marry me? It sounds cliche but I had been dreaming of that moment since I was in High School and it was finally here. I had found an amazing man who loves me and was everything I had always wanted. I was so excited to start the next chapter of our lives, especially because it meant the planning could being!

DSC_2331Choosing our bridal party was very easy! We both have had amazing people in our lives that have supported us through all life’s obstacles.

The Boys

Rob had Tim by his side as his Best Man, a life long friend of about 25 years, Tim. Mark, who he has known since his days working at SouthWest. Brian who was introduced to him by “an old friend”. They didn’t get along at first but they finally realized it was because they were so alike! He also had Karsten by his side, who he met through some classes for his job.

The Girls

My sister Sarah of course was my Maid of Honor. My Matron of Honor was my best friend of about 20 years, Michelle. My bridesmaids were some of my dearest friends from college and graduate school, Sarah, Jamie, and Jen.

Our flower girl and ring bearer were Joshua and Charlotte, kiddos of Jamie & Jason. I met Jamie in graduate school and spent as much free time as she could babysitting Joshua! Jamie was pregnant with Charlotte during our second year and I not only got to meet her on the day she was born, but also have the honor of being her Godmother.

Save The Date

Rob and I decided we wanted to get married in DC for a few reasons. Most importantly, it is where we met, where we live and the one location that we both have in common. We also loved the idea of our guests making our wedding into a little vacation to explore the city. After choosing DC as the location; deciding on the time frame was easy, the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival. We chose The Key Bridge Marriott for our ceremony, reception and hotel accommodations. We were very impressed with their professionalism and services from the beginning. The hotel was just over the bridge from DC so it was out of the way of city traffic but still metro accessible.

We had a wonderful time walking around campus to shoot some engagement photos. One of our must have spots was the Foggy Bottom Metro where Rob and I first met one another.

My favorite part about planning the wedding was all of the DIY projects I got to make. I wanted our wedding to be personalized and enjoyed creating several custom pieces for both the ceremony and reception.

Flower Girl & Ring Bearer

We found a box while vacationing in Gatlinburg, TN for our ring bearer, Joshua to hold. We loved the inscription and liked the idea of the box more than a pillow. I also found a kit to make a basket and luckily a color that matched the wedding perfectly. This was filled with petals that our flower girl, Charlotte, spread down the aisle.

Something Borrowed

My favorite item was my garter that my Mom made out of pieces from my Grandmother’s wedding dress. My Mom will also make a garter for my Grandmother’s six other grandchildren.

I also decided that I wanted silk flowers for the bouquets and boutineers. We went to a wholesale store and purchased tons of flowers! I chose a different flower for each bridesmaid that reminded me of them. My bouquet was then a mixture of all of theirs since I am who I am today because of each of them. The flowers I chose were peonies, roses, carnations, gardenias and daisies. We mixed in some cherry blossom sprays and greens to fill out the bouquets.

Instead of tuxedos, Rob decided on a suit from Kohls. Each groomsmen purchased the same one on sale, which ended up being cheaper then renting a tux. For a gift we bought them their tie.

Rob and Mary mine 029

After the rehearsal my parents hosted a small reception for the bridal party and anyone who was already in town. Rob and I had a chance to thank all those involved with the wedding and give them a small token of our appreciation. In addition to their ties, Rob got the guys flasks with their initials on them. I got the girls bags embroidered with their initial, pink flip flops to wear when we took pictures around DC and a few other items.

Instead of exchanging gifts, Rob and I wrote letters to each other to read before we saw one another. While I know Rob spent time thinking about it, I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw mine was written on Marriott letterhead!
