The durian is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio and the Malvaceae family (although some taxonomists place Durio in a distinct family, Durionaceae). Widely known and revered in southeast Asia as the “king of fruits”, the durian is distinctive for its large size, unique odour, and formidable thorn-covered husk. The fruit can grow as large as 30 centimetres (12 in) long and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter, and it typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to 7 lb). Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red, depending on the species.
The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks. The odour has led to the fruit’s banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.
The durian, native to Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, has been known to the Western world for about 600 years. The 19th-century British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace famously described its flesh as “a rich custard highly flavoured with almonds”. The flesh can be consumed at various stages of ripeness, and it is used to flavour a wide variety of savoury and sweet edibles in Southeast Asian cuisines. The seeds can also be eaten when cooked.
There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit. Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market: other species are sold in their local regions. There are hundreds of durian cultivars; many consumers express preferences for specific cultivars, which fetch higher prices in the market.

Sleep: Peanut, if you ever read this, just know that I LOVE YOU! However, sleep has become almost non-existent. Although the Zantac for heartburn/acid reflux has been an improvement, I am still finding myself waking up coughing at least once a night. My body hurts so much that it is a big production to roll over and it always results in me waking up and usually winds up having a trip to the bathroom thrown in there as well. For awhile Rob would wake up and try to help, now he mumbles a little and is snoring about 5 seconds later.
Best worst moment this week: Rob and I spent Friday night – Saturday morning in the ER/L&D. Rob woke up to me shivering so bad that my teeth were actually chattering. I had really bad cramping and when we called the OB on duty, they said to just go to the ER. This was my first ER experience and I wasn’t really impressed. They prescribed a Z Pack because it seemed like my body was trying to fight something off in a hurry. We then went to L&D because they wanted to monitor Peanut and I for awhile. I was showing no signs of preterm labor and was instructed to start taking it easy, drink as much as I can and get off my feet!
Best moment this week: I took it easy on Sunday but managed to get the sheets on Peanut’s crib and the pad on the changing table. I can’t believe how the nursery is finally coming together! Pictures to come soon 🙂

Anything making you queasy or sick: Still nothing, I am pretty darn lucky!
Symptoms: Heartburn/acid reflux, RLP, swelling hands and feet, Braxton Hicks, overall discomfort
Looking forward to: We are going Friday for another ultrasound so see exactly how big Peanut is since I have been measing about 2-2 1/2 weeks ahead at my last few appointments. I am nervous that they are going to spill the beans about Peanut’s gender but I figured if I told everyone I see and the tech a few times, maybe they will get the picture. As much as I hate to admit it, I am also looking forward to tomorrow being my last day of work. With everything that happened this weekend and how I have been feeling this week, I think it was the best decision for Peanut and I.
