This past February I finally found the spark I had been waiting for. The spark motivating me to make myself a priority and start taking care of myself. Over the next year I will be participating in a variety of k, 10k, and half marathons leading up to the 2018 Disney Fairy Tale Challenge.
I have a long journey ahead of me but a great support system, lots of checkpoints, and one heck of goal to reach. As I was looking for races in Ottawa I came across the SHOPPERS LOVE. YOU. Run for Women. It is a national event series held in 15 cities across Canada in support of women’s mental health programs.
Since this hits rather close to home I knew I wanted to participate and work to raise additional funds to help.
I haven’t shared this on her yet, I guess I was waiting for the right time. But after Caity was born I was diagnosed with Postpartum Depression (PPD). Yes it was a stressful time for us as Rob was in graduate school and Caity had an awful case of colic. But I knew something wasn’t right. I found myself crying for no reason and wishing I could go back in time when it was just the two of us. That was the day I told Rob I needed help. I can’t believe what a difference medication, meditation, and now exercise has made for me. I am not as anxious, I have more patience, and I find myself in constant awe of motherhood. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly bad days. Like yesterday when I walked in to find a toddler with poo covered hands and walls. That was a “dinner is being delivered” night followed by a hot bath.
Had it not been for my support system I may have ignored the symptoms and continued to think my feelings were normal and I just had to “suck it up”. Unfortunately there are far too many women who need help and can’t afford it, don’t have a support system to help them through it, or don’t even know they need it. This has to stop. We need to start taking care of the women in our lives. The women who carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. The women who spend all day taking care of others, running out of time for themselves.
So here is where I need your help. In an effort to raise as much money as possible I will be taking 100 steps for every $1 that I raise. 100% of all donations and pledges go right to the Shoppers Drug Mart Life Foundation in support of The Royal – Mental Health – Care & Research. I will announce every morning which pledges I will be honoring that day and share a photo at the end of the day of my step count. The more you donate, the more I walk!!!
