Why won’t my sewing machine sew over elastic?
When your machine refuses to sew elastic, it may be due to some things you are doing wrong or maybe not aware of. Sewing experts identified some mistakes people often commit in sewing elastic. These are using the wrong needle, unadjusted bobbin tension, the seam is not made elastic, or foot pressure is not reduced.
Can you sew elastic with a straight stitch?
You can stitch elastic straight onto your piece of fabric using a straight or zigzag stitch. When you’re making a waistband, join the elastic together first to the correct length.
What is the ratio of elastic to fabric?
When sewing elastic, a 1:2 or 1:3 elastic sewing ratio is commonly used. Mark four equal distances on the fabric and the elastic with a marker or pin, stretch the elastic to match the markings on the fabric as you sew zigzag stitch.
Why does my sewing machine jam with elastic?
If your bobbin is threaded wrongly, it could cause jamming issues to your sewing machine. Your bobbin thread won’t move properly if there are knots or if the bobbin isn’t properly wound. Check to see if the threading on your bobbin is all tangled, and fix it if you can.
What is a stretch needle?
A stretch needle has what is called a ‘scarf’ which allows extra room for the hook to pass close by and prevents skipped stitches making it ideal for use with fabrics such as Lycra, power net, two way stretch knits, silk jersey, spandex and highly elasticated synthetic fabrics or indeed elastic itself.
