How do you clean dirty yarn?

If your yarns are dirty or stained, you can soak them overnight. But if your reason for washing is to straighten your yarns, soaking them for half an hour will do the trick. Rinse yarn skeins one at a time. Drain the water used for soaking, then rinse your yarn skeins one-by-one to remove all the soap residue.

How do you recondition yarn?

Simply soak the yarn in some tepid water. There’s no need to agitate it, especially if it is wool and could felt. Just let the yarn absorb the water. Then, dump out or drain the water and gently press the yarn with your hands to get rid of some of the excess water.

Set your washing machine to a gentle cycle, and use a mild detergent. Use a fabric softener if you want your yarn softer and smell good. Rinse with warm or cold water but make sure to wash off all the detergent and softener and then place it in the dryer with a dryer sheet.
