Where should your hands be when using a sewing machine?
Place your left hand lightly on top of the fabric on the left side of the presser foot. You’ll use the fingers on this hand to control the fabric as it moves through the machine. Your arms and elbows should be lifted slightly and not resting on the table.
How far from the presser foot should your fingers be at all times?
When guiding fabric over the throat plate, keep your fingers an inch or two away from the presser foot at all times. If you pause between stitches, take your foot off the foot controller so that you don’t accidentally set the needle in motion. If you are taking a longer pause, turn off the machine completely.

Which side should you sew on?
You usually sew things with right sides together so the stitching will be on the inside of the finished project. Wrong side: The other surface is the “wrong” side of the fabric. The fabric design is sometimes visible on the wrong side of the fabric, but it will be more faded than on the right side.
What thread tension should I use?
The dial settings run from 0 to 9, so 4.5 is generally the ‘default’ position for normal straight-stitch sewing. This should be suitable for most fabrics. If you are doing a zig-zag stitch, or another stitch that has width, then you may find that the bobbin thread is pulled through to the top.

How do you adjust the presser foot on a sewing machine?
Turn the presser foot pressure dial at the back of the machine to adjust the pressure of the presser foot. – The presser foot pressure can be set to one of four levels (between 1 and 4). – The larger the setting, the stronger the pressure. Use setting 1 or 2 for thick fabrics, use setting 3 or 4 for thinner fabrics.
